Serengeti
What to know before visiting Serengeti
The Serengeti is a vast and spectacular area in East Africa, stretching across northern Tanzania and partially extending into southwestern Kenya, where it is known as the Masai Mara. It is recognized worldwide for its remarkable biodiversity and for the greatest natural spectacle of terrestrial animal migration in the world: the great migration of antelopes, zebras and gazelles.
The Serengeti National Park is particularly famous for the great annual migration of wildebeests, when over two million antelopes, zebras and gazelles cross the savannah in search of fresh pastures, closely pursued by predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas.
With an area of approximately 14,750 km, the park offers varied landscapes: from endless expanses of grass (which gave it the name Serengeti, which means endless plain in the Maasai language), to forested hills, rivers, lakes and rock formations called kopje.
It is an ideal place for safaris, both by car and by hot air balloon, and is inhabited by the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros and leopard), but also by many other species such as giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, jackals and over 500 species of birds.
