Cusco Legend of the Andes
What to know before visiting Cusco
Cusco is a spectacular historical city in southeastern Peru, located at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters in the Peruvian Andes. It is considered the historical capital of the country and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 due to its cultural and architectural richness.
Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire, the administrative, political and religious center of one of the most advanced civilizations of pre-Columbian America. After the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, the city became an important colonial center, and its architecture began to combine Inca-style stone structures with Spanish Baroque churches and buildings. This unique fusion is still visible today, creating an unmistakable urban landscape.
The city preserves Inca and Andean traditions, combined with colonial influences. Festivals such as Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun, in June) attract thousands of visitors, offering a vibrant experience of indigenous culture. Local cuisine includes dishes such as cuy (guinea pig), quinoa and chiriuchu corn soup.
Cusco is the starting point for visiting the famous archaeological site of Machu Picchu, either by train to Aguas Calientes or via trekking routes such as the Inca Trail..., Salkantay or Lares. The Sacred Valley, with its picturesque villages and Inca ruins, is also easily accessible from the city.
