Lima, a metropolis between desert and ocean
What to know before visiting Lima
Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru, located on the central-western coast of the country, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
Founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro as Ciudad de los Reyes (City of Kings), Lima quickly became the political, economic and cultural center of the Spanish colony in South America and, later, of the modern Peruvian state.
The historic center of Lima has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988, due to its well-preserved colonial architecture. Notable landmarks include the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral of Lima, the Government Palace and the Monastery of San Francisco, famous for its catacombs. The city's architecture combines Spanish colonial elements with modern influences, reflecting the transformations of recent centuries.
In addition to the historic center, tourists can explore neighborhoods such as Miraflores. Known for its oceanfront promenades, parks and nightlife, or Barranco, famous for its bohemian atmosphere, urban art and restaurants. Lima's coast offers opportunities for surfing, and the proximity to archaeological sites like Pachacamac adds an additional historical dimension to the travel experience.
