Ushuaia
What to know before visiting Ushuaia
Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, located in the province of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, on the shores of the Beagle Channel and surrounded by the Martial Mountains. The town is known as the City at the End of the World and is an important starting point for expeditions to Antarctica.
Geographically, Ushuaia is located between the ocean and the mountains, offering spectacular landscapes that combine subantarctic forests, snowy peaks and cold waters. The climate is subpolar oceanic, with short, cool summers and long, snowy winters.
Historically, the area was originally inhabited by the indigenous Yaghan tribes, who lived from fishing and maritime hunting. European explorers arrived in the region in the 19th century, and the city began to develop around a penal colony founded in 1896. The prison operated until 1947 and is today a museum visited by many tourists.
